Spring is here landscapes from coast to coast are blooming with vibrant color. Of course, landscape roses turn that color into a spectacular statement. Many of my readers are going with a favorite standby, the Lady Banks climbing rose
The Lady Banks Climbing Rose, is an heirloom rose. An heirloom, or antique, rose is a variety that was in existence before 1867, which was when the first hybrid tea rose, the “La France,” was introduced.
Many rose gardeners prefer heirloom roses for the full flower formation, as well as the belief that they are hardier and less susceptible to disease. While hybrid teas are designed for cutting with long stems that are perfectly suited to bouquets and floral arrangements, the heirloom roses are the queen of the garden with colorful blooms on full bushes that are a focal point for any landscape.
The Lady Banks climbing rose is one of those tried and true favorites. As it is a vigorous climber, make sure that it is planted with a suitable support. If you’re like me and running out of fence or house area to cover, create a new spot for a climbing rose with a structure such as an arbor or sturdy trellis.
I just found this steel garden arbor on Amazon (my favorite one-stop shopping destination. Who needs a mall with Amazon?) There are two variations, the four sided and a three sided arbor. Can’t you just picture the Lady Banks rose sprawling over it? The three sided arbor would be perfect for that corner garden focal structure.
The garden arbors can be ordered online here: four sided trellis and three gazebo arch.
Spring and summer are made for enjoying your garden, so get out and smell the roses! I am collecting rose pictures for an online gallery. If you’d like yours to be included, please send me a picture with a note of the variety.
