• Climbing Rose Trellis

There is nothing quite so beautiful as a rose in a garden landscape, and a climbing rose packs an added punch.  If you would like to expand the look of your garden to including climbing roses but aren’t sure where to place it, a climbing rose trellis might be a good option.

Trellis’s for roses come in a variety of sizes and structures.  They can be as simple as lattice secured to a fence or the side of a home or as elaborate as a garden arbor or gazebo.  There are several factors to consider when deciding what type of structure you will need.

    • How large of space do you have for a climbing rose? While one of the obvious advantages of planting a climbing rose versus a shrub rose is that the rose bush will take up a vertical space rather than a horizontal, still the taller the rose will be climbing, the broader and more sturdy the base of the trellis structure needs to be.
    • Will you have other companion plants with your climbing roses. If so, you will need to factor in the size and nutrient requirements of those plants.  (Our Wild About Roses ebook includes a fabulous guide to companion plants for roses.)
    • Is the climbing rose trellis going to be used as a backdrop or as part of an outdoor living area? In other words, is the trellis structure going to provide a function other than holding up the rose plant?  Some trellis’s just provide a support for the rose and a focal point of interest.  Others serve a purpose, as in the case of an arch that provides separation and a gateway into another garden area, or an arbor trellis which can provide some shelter and delineate an outdoor living space.

My suggestion is to measure your yard and determine how much space you have.  Next browse through an online garden catalog for the right shape and size for your climbing rose structure.  Also keep in mind that the style of the trellis should fit the style of your home and the rest of your landscaping.  If you have a modern style house, you don’t want to get a trellis that looks rustic.

Whatever the size of your yard or budget, there is a climbing rose trellis to fit your needs.   The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.  Pick a rose trellis, pick your climbing rose plant and create a thing of natural beauty in your landscape.
